“If we were nonunion, we wouldn’t have two legs to stand on,” said L.U. 8198 member James Doom. “We won many arbitrations which we couldn’t pursue without the UMWA behind us.”
The mining industry provides jobs to more than just miners, it also supports transportation workers, power plant workers, and loading dock / terminal workers. The United Mine Workers of America represents terminal workers at facilities in Appalachia and the Midwest.
Transferring millions of tons of coal, petcoke and ilmenite ore a year, these UMWA members are safe and secure in their employment. They know the union will enforce the terms and conditions spelled out in their collective bargaining agreement with the company.
