Union Plus: How It Works

Your Benefits—For Union Members by Union Members

We Work Hard to Make Life a little Easier for You and Your Family

Union Plus is a non-profit and we’re the ONLY consumer benefits organization created and endorsed by the AFL-CIO.

Here at Union Plus, our mission is to improve the quality of life for union members and their families, provide valuable benefits and services that strengthen the ties of union members to their unions and contribute funding to the labor movement.

We believe that our country’s middle class was built by union-strong members like you, so we diligently research every benefit and tailor them to support you and other union members — we’re working hard to make life a little easier for you.

How it Works—Solidarity, Savings and Support

  • Stand in Solidarity
Did you know that there are more than 12 million union members in the United States? Because of our strength in numbers, we’re able to negotiate exclusive discounts and financial assistance programs just for union members and their families.

  • Savings and Unique Programs — Pay it Forward
We pass along the exclusive benefits we’ve negotiated on behalf of union members directly to you. These benefits and programs are FREE to union members and their families. There’s no membership —if you’re a current or retired union member or a family member — you’re in.

  • Supporting Union Workers and Union-Made Products
We’re union and we stand by union. We’re committed to supporting U.S.-based and union workers, right down to using union printers and union-made products in our offices and our staff are members of OPEIU, Local 2.We’ve negotiated with some of the biggest names and brands to get you the discounts you deserve and the benefits working union members need — such as hardship help, strike grants and disability benefits. We’ve got your back!

If You’re Union — You’re Eligible

As current and retired union members, you are automatically eligible for your union’s Union Plus Benefits — often times, your parents, spouse and children are also eligible.  No Union Plus membership, No Fees, No Waiting Period, No Hassle.

Don’t have access to a union job? Consider joining Working America for free.

What We Don’t Do

We don’t manage or use any union membership dues to finance our budget or benefits. Period.

We also don’t manage any union pension funds or health care funds.  Typically your union handles those benefits directly.

Matewan 100th Year Anniversary

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Matewan when a shootout occurred in the town of Matewan, West Virginia between the local coal miners and Baldwin–Felts Detective Agency. UMWA International President Cecil E. Roberts talks about the events that took place on May 19, 1920 and the impact it made on how we live today.

2020 UMWA Workers Memorial Video (Farmington Mine Disaster)

The United Mine Workers have long fought for better health and safety on the job, as we have lost more members than any other union to disasters and occupational diseases. Indeed, miners and their families led the way in demanding creation of the first federal occupational safety enforcement agency, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), in the wake of the Farmington #9 explosion in 1968.

As we recognize Workers Memorial Day 2020, we pray for those workers killed or injured on the job this year, last year, and every year. And we call on all Americans to join us as we get right back to fighting for the living.

March 29, 2020 – National Vietnam War Veterans Day

March 29th was recognized as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. UMWA International President Cecil E. Roberts encourages everyone to take time to honor the women and men who served their country in the Vietnam War.

“As a Vietnam Veteran myself, I know first-hand the pride and honor of serving my Country in that war and the unrest and heartache that Vietnam Veterans experienced upon their return home. The men and women, who sacrificed so much to defend the principles of our Nation during the Vietnam War, never got a parade or a formal welcoming home ceremony. They were not hailed as heroes for serving in southeast Asia, as other returning Military Veterans were in past wars. But it is never too late to honor their service. It is never too late to welcome them home. And it is certainly never too late to show respect to these Veterans as a citizen of a grateful Nation.”

Promise Kept – Pension Victory Video

On December 20, 2019, Congress “KEPT THE PROMISE” and secured the pensions and health care of the men and women who risked their lives to energize our nation.

“When the history of our struggle to preserve miners’ pensions and health care is written, it will be recorded that, against all odds and in spite of all those who doubted our ability to succeed, the UMWA gathered together and joined with our allies to “Keep the Promise”. There has never been a greater force for justice and dignity on earth than the American Labor Movement and no greater Union than the UMWA.” – President Cecil E. Roberts

President Roberts’ end of year message – 12.21.2019

UMWA International President Cecil E. Roberts thanks the UMWA membership for their hard work and dedication in reaching the finish line of the 10 year battle to preserve the pensions of over 92,000 retired and active miners. This legislation also secured the health care for over 14,000 miners.

Senator Joe Manchin celebrates the inclusion of the Bipartisan American Miners Act

Senator Joe Manchin (D-Wv.) celebrates the inclusion of the Bipartisan American Miners Act in the final funding package to keep the government open. It secures pensions and healthcare for tens of thousands of coal miners, their widows & families.

“I’m on the Senate floor today to celebrate a bipartisan agreement to secure pensions and healthcare for tens of thousands of coal miners, their widows, and their families. My bill, the Bipartisan American Miners Act, has been included in the final funding package that will keep the government open beyond December 20th. We did our job, and I want to give my sincere thanks to all of my colleagues for putting partisan politics aside and for rising above the divineness and tribalism in order to keep the promise we made in 1946.”
