Members of Congress Speak Out in Support of Miners’ Protection Act

Members of Congress trying to Keeping the Promise

The UMWA is currently working to preserve the retirement benefits promised by President Harry Truman in 1946 and upheld in 1992 with the COAL Act and its subsequent amendments. Currently there is bi-partisan support in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate for this life or death legislation. Below are some of the speeches made my politicians either sponsoring, co-sponsoring, or supporting the legislation.

UPDATE:

September 14, 2016 – U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Mark Warner (D-VA) and Rob Portman (R-OH) participated in a bipartisan colloquy on the Senate floor today to defend the Miners Protection Act and fight for its passage before recess. Watch the video below.

On May 25, 2016, five U.S. Senators spoke during the Senate floor proceedings about the need to pass the Miners’ Protection Act, S. 1714, to save the health care and pensions for hundreds of thousands of UMWA retirees, widows and their families.

U.S. Senator Shelly Moore Capito (R-WV) also spoke on the Senate floor in support of the legislation on June 21, 2016.

After receiving criticism from a Senator supported by the Heritage Foundation, on July 12, Senator Manchin went back on the Senate floor to refute the incorrect statements.

Congressman David McKinley (R-WV) spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives on July 14, 2016.
