District 31 – District In Action

District 31 in Action!

District 31 stands as the vibrant heart of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), boasting the largest active membership within the union. This expansive district serves as a powerful advocate for workers in the northern regions of West Virginia and eastern Ohio. District 31’s influence is far-reaching, covering a diverse and dynamic range of occupations, including coal miners, federal research technicians, manufacturers, and county employees.

  • Powhatan Point Mine Disaster
A memorial was held on July 12, 2024, in honor of the 80th anniversary of the Powhatan Point Mine Disaster where 66 miners lost their lives in a fire. 190 workers were in the mine when the fire occurred. 60 of those killed had barricaded themselves from the flames using boards, posts, screw-type roof jacks, coal and clothing. On June 20, 1945, the mine returned to operation, using the areas not affected by the fire. In 1946, a decision was made to enter the affected areas to begin recovering the bodies. That effort lasted until 1947.
