The Government of Saskatchewan has made a strategic decision to invest in the future of coal-fired power generation, extending the operational life of key units across the province. This bold direction is not just about energy—it’s about sovereignty, sustainability, and the livelihoods of thousands of Saskatchewan families.
Asserting Provincial Energy Autonomy
In response to the federal government’s mandate to phase out coal-fired electricity by 2030, Saskatchewan is exercising its constitutional right to manage its own natural resources and energy policy. This decision reinforces the province’s commitment to securing a reliable, affordable, and locally governed energy future that serves the interests of Saskatchewan people first.
Supported by Crown Investments Corporation (CIC), SaskPower, and the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA), the Government of Saskatchewan is pursuing a long-term vision where coal remains a viable part of the province’s energy mix well beyond 2050.
Strategic Reinvestment in Coal Infrastructure
The revitalization plan includes:
- Refurbishment of Boundary Dam Unit 4 to extend its life and improve efficiency.
- Extension of up to 1,500 MW of coal power generation capacity, ensuring continued energy security.
- Investment in advanced Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology to mitigate emissions and align with evolving environmental standards.
- Commitment to responsible resource management that balances energy needs with environmental stewardship.
Protecting Jobs and Strengthening Communities
This effort is about more than infrastructure—it’s about people. The coal industry has long been a pillar of Saskatchewan’s economy, providing stable, unionized jobs and supporting local communities. Preserving coal means preserving the economic well-being of towns like Estevan, where UMWA Local 7606 members continue to be the backbone of Saskatchewan’s power workforce.
With strong backing from the United Mine Workers of America and SaskPower, the province ensures that workers are not left behind in transitioning to a low-carbon economy. These letters of support, included below, show the shared commitment to worker protection, energy stability, and long-term planning.
A Vision for a Sustainable, Prosperous Saskatchewan
- Strengthen Saskatchewan’s energy independence.
- Stimulate local economies and job creation.
