On June 11, 2024, William Davis Miners’ Memorial Day was held in Nova Scotia, Canada. The day is named in memory of William Davis, a coal miner who was killed by company police during a 1925 strike while protesting the British Empire Steel Corporation’s abuse of workers’ rights. “The message of Davis Day still holds great significance to workers today,” said International Auditor/ Teller Jody Dukart. “It is a reminder of the sacrifices made by those willing to fight relentlessly for the rights and safety of working people.”

 

“We hold this Davis Day memorial service every year,” said International District 2 Vice President Chuck Knisell. “And every year, you can see the affects those fatalities, injuries and damage still have on loved ones and the community. We are honored to share this moment with the families and foster unity and resiliency in the fight for safety and workers’ rights.”

Canadian Labour Congress President Bea Bruske had the opportunity to tour CCS (Carbon, Capture, and Storage). “Bea is interested in this technology and wants to help us promote the technology in Ottawa,” said International Auditor/Teller Jody Dukart. “She recognizes the importance of what coal mining and power generation brings to the area for workers and organized labour and wants to help us keep that alive.” Jody and members of Sub-District 26 also took President Bruske out to the miner’s grave in Bienfait and explained the history of the 1931 Estevan Riot.

On July 1, 2024, UMWA members and staff celebrated Canada Day, commemorating the formation of the Federation of Canada in 1867. Local Union 7606 participated in the July 1st Parade in Bienfait, Canada, by constructing and designing a float to display for the community during the event. Dominion Day, renamed Canada Day in 1982, holds significant historical importance in Canadian history. It is a day of celebration, reflection, and cultural observance.
