Levi Allen comes from a long tradition of UMWA coal miners. Born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, on July 6, 1981, Levi and his brother Aaron were raised in Moundsville, West Virginia by his mother, Brenda, and stepfather, John Lavenski, who he has always regarded as his father. Levi’s grandfather, Albert Marlo, was a member of the UMWA Local Union 1473, and was working in the mining industry at the time of his death.
John Lavenski is a member of UMWA Local Union 1638 and worked for 40 years at the McElroy mine outside Moundsville. Lavenski’s father, brother and uncles were all coal miners and UMWA members.
Levi began his coal mining career in 2007, hiring into the McElroy mine (now the Marshall County mine) as a general inside laborer, working primarily at the coal face. After working as a beltman, he earned his electrician’s card and began working as a Mechanic/Electrician throughout the mine.
Levi was active in Local Union 1638 from his first day at work, and became the Local’s Recording Secretary in 2010. He was elected to the Mine Committee in 2012 and as the Local Union President in 2014.
Levi was recognized as a rising talent in the UMWA and was hired by President Roberts onto the International Staff in 2015. He became the Executive Assistant to the International Secretary-Treasurer in January, 2017 and assumed the duties of International Secretary-Treasurer on July 1, 2017.
Levi graduated from John Marshall High School in Moundsville and attended West Liberty University. He is married to the former Shannon Sechrest. He and Shannon are blessed with five children; Owen, Chloe, Lucy, Finnegan and Auggie.
