Privacy Policy

The United Mine Workers of America (the “UMWA”) has compiled this Privacy Policy as a resource for those who are concerned with how their personally-identifiable information (“PII”) is used online. PII is information that can be used on its own or with other information to identify, contact, or locate an individual, or to identify them in context. Please read this Privacy Policy carefully to understand how the UMWA collects, uses, protects, and otherwise handles your PII as it relates to your use of our Website, www.umwa.org.

What PII does the UMWA collect from the people who visit our Website?

Certain features of our Website might ask you to enter your name, email address, mailing address, phone number, and/or other details. The Website collects this PII and makes it available to the UMWA.

When does the UMWA collect your PII via the Website?

The UMWA collects PII from you when you use our Website to subscribe to a newsletter, fill out a form, or enter other information.

How does the UMWA use your PII?

The UMWA might use the PII we collect from you in the following ways:
• To improve our Website to serve you better
• To administer Website features
• To follow up with you after correspondence with us
• To update our address and contact information records

How does the UMWA protect your PII?

The UMWA implements a variety of security measures to maintain the safety of your PII. We store all PII collected through our Website on secure networks and encrypt it using Secure Socket Layer (“SSL”) technology. PII is accessible only by a limited number of persons who have special access rights to these networks, and we require these individuals to keep all PII confidential. For additional security, we scan PII storage locations regularly for malware that might compromise the privacy of your information.

Does the UMWA use “cookies” on the Website?

Cookies are small files that a website or its service provider transfers to your computer’s hard drive through your web browser, if you allow them. Cookies enable the systems of the website or service provider to recognize your browser and capture and remember certain information. We use them to help us understand your Website use preferences based on your previous or current activity on our Website, enabling us to provide you with improved services. We also use cookies to compile aggregate data about the Website’s traffic and users’ interactions with it so we can offer better online experiences and tools in the future.

Through your browser’s settings, you can choose for your computer to warn you each time a website or service provider sends a cookie to you, or you can choose to prohibit all cookies. If you turn cookies off, however, some Website features might be disabled.

Does the UMWA share your PII with third parties?

Except as noted below, the UMWA will not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your PII to third parties. In this context, the definition of “third parties” does not include web hosting partners and other parties who help us operate our Website, conduct our business, and/or serve Website users. If we share your PII with any of these parties, we will require them to abide by the same PII confidentiality standards that we use ourselves. We might also release your PII when doing so is necessary to comply with the law, enforce our Website policies, and/or protect our or others’ rights, property, and/or safety.

Do third-party links on the Website implicate your PII?

The UMWA might offer third-party products and/or services on our Website and/or place links on the Website that connect users to these products and/or services. Third-party, non-UMWA websites have separate and independent privacy policies, and we have no responsibility or ability to control these sites’ use of any PII that you might share with them. Please note that the UMWA Store and its website, www.umwastore.org, is a third-party entity that partners with the UMWA but which is responsible for maintaining its own privacy policies.
