UMWA statement on accident at Gibson County Coal Co. mine near Princeton, Ind.

date:
August 10, 2007

FAIRFAX, VA - United Mine Workers of America International President Cecil E. Roberts issued the following statement today:

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the workers who lost their lives in this tragic event, and to their families.

“The UMWA stands ready to lend any form of assistance that may be required during this very difficult time.

“The successive mine site disasters taking place this week have captured the sympathy and support of the American people, just as they responded to the terrible accidents of early 2006, and serve as stark reminders that safety concerns must always be made the highest priority in this often hazardous line of work.”
