United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) International President Cecil E. Roberts issued the following statement today:

“The members of the UMWA were saddened to learn of the illness that has struck our friend,  Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.). Our thoughts and prayers for a full recovery are with him and his family as he starts his fight to overcome it.

“Sen. Kennedy has demonstrated, time and again, his respect and deep regard for coal miners and the work we do. He has been a champion of ours in the Congress, especially in the wake of the tragedies that have struck the coalfields in recent years. More than that, his tireless efforts on behalf of all working people–both in America and outside our borders–remains an inspiration to all.

“Secretary-Treasurer Kane and I, along with all our members, look forward to the day when he will once again take his place in the well of the Senate, fighting for our members, our families, our neighbors, and our fellow citizens. There is no other like him.”
