United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) International President Cecil E. Roberts issued the following statement today:

“The UMWA is so very proud that our own past president and my dear friend Richard L. Trumka has been elected President of the AFL-CIO. We know that he will carry on the tradition of strong national labor leaders who rose from the UMWA like William Green, Phil Murray and the great John L. Lewis.

“We, along with all the other unions of our federation, are energized by the election of Rich and his leadership team, Liz Shuler and Arlene Holt-Baker. The energy, vision and strength that Rich, Liz and Arlene bring to the leadership of the labor movement will soon be reflected in workplaces across our nation.

“And with the passage of the Employee Free Choice Act, Rich Trumka will lead the greatest surge of organizing new, younger and more diverse workers into our nation’s unions, including the UMWA, that we have seen since the 1930s. That will bring even more new energy and vibrancy to our movement as we work to rebuild the American middle class and expand economic opportunity to all Americans, not just a wealthy few.”
