FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TRIANGLE, VA. – United Mine Workers of America International President Cecil E. Roberts issued the following statement today:

“We are extremely pleased with Gov. Manchin’s appointment of C.A. Phillips to be Acting Director  of the West Virginia Office of Miner’s Health, Safety and Training (MSHT). This marks a new day for West Virginia’s miners, as there will now be someone in that office who understands what it means to pack a lunch bucket and go to work in a coal mine every day.

“C.A. Phillips’ first priority has always been making mines safer for miners. He has strong experience–as an underground miner, a long-time UMWA safety and health expert and as Deputy Director of MSHT for the last ten years–that will allow him to hit the ground running in this job.

“There is no one more qualified to hold this position than C.A. Phillips. Gov. Manchin has made the right move in appointing him, and miners throughout the state of West Virginia should know that they have a strong advocate for them and their safety at the head of MSHT.”
